With more payroll providers moving to the cloud and Payday Super now in effect, many farm businesses are asking the same question: Do I need to switch?
The short answer is... not necessarily.
It's easy to assume newer technology is always the better option. But when it comes to payroll, the best solution isn't the one with the most features. It's the one that fits the way your business operates.
To better understand what farmers actually need from payroll software, we asked.
What we learned from farm businesses
We recently surveyed farm businesses across Australia to learn more about their payroll requirements and future plans.
The results painted a clear picture.
- 85% employ between 1 and 5 people
- Almost 90% don't require rostering or workforce scheduling
- Nearly 90% don't currently need advanced HR or compliance tools
- More than 80% expect their business to remain about the same size over the next three years
Perhaps the biggest insight?
Most respondents simply wanted a payroll solution that is reliable, easy to use and cost-effective.
More features don't always mean a better fit
There's no shortage of modern payroll platforms promising everything from employee self-service and mobile apps to HR management and performance tracking.
Those features can be valuable for businesses with complex workforce requirements.
But for many farming businesses, they can also mean paying for functionality that simply isn't needed.
More features don't automatically make payroll easier. In fact, they can introduce additional complexity, increase training requirements and add unnecessary costs.
Sometimes, the simplest solution is the most effective.
The right payroll depends on your business
Every farm is different.
If you employ a small team, have straightforward payroll requirements and simply want to stay compliant while paying your employees accurately, a traditional payroll solution may continue to be the best fit.
If your business is growing, employs larger teams, has multiple managers or requires advanced workforce management and HR tools, then a cloud-based payroll platform may provide additional value.
The important thing is choosing a solution based on your business needs, not industry trends.
